LONGFELLOW, HENRY WADSWORTH
Autograph letter signed. Cambridge: Oct. 1 1880. A four-page autograph letter to "Mr. Craig" on the recto and verso of a bifolium, signed "Henry W. Longfellow". 7 x 4 1/2 inches (18 x 11 cm). A few old stains, pin-mark at head, but respectable overall .
A charming letter to a friend who had been a guest at Longfellow's summer quarters in Nahant, Mass. Longfellow writes in humorous terms of his missing Craig after the latter left Nahant. He writes of dining with the Princess Dora d'Istria (the Duchess Helena Koltsova-Massalskaya), and of the illness in New York of their mutual friend the "beautiful Marchesa." He comments that Appleton (presumably the publisher) has gone to the mountains of North Carolina with Frederic Edwin Church and his wife. In short, this is a chatty and cheerful, even funny letter.
