Of oval form, the scalloped rim applied with classical medallions, with two loop handles above a foliate decorated band, raised on four swan-form feet, engraved with the Royal arms of King William IV and Queen Adelaide of Great Britain. Inscribed undersides Biennais Orfevre de ses Majestes Imperiales et Royales et de S.M. Le Roi de Hollande a Paris au Singe Violet, No. 283; one engraved underside 8 M, 7 3/4 Loth No. 5 1er titre and the other 7 M 5 7/8 Loth No. 6 1er titre. Length over handles 14 1/2 inches (37 cm), total approximately 119 ounces.
A set of plates engraved with the same arms sold Sotheby's New York, April 6, 1989, lot 31. It was noted then that the service may have been purchased by the King himself or possibly given as a gift from Queen Adelaide's family, the Dukes of Saxe-Meiningen.

Simon Jacobsz de Vlieger - Sold for $419,600
Highlighting the sale was Dutch artist Simon Jacobsz de Vlieger’s view of A Coastal Landscape with Dutch Frigates Exchanging Salutes that soared past its estimate of $60,000-80,000 to achieve a stunning $419,600. Simon Jacobsz de Vlieger (1601-1653) was one of the most important and influential Dutch marine painters of the 17th century. This sweeping view of ships off the coast of Holland, painted in the late 1640s, is a classic example of his late style, which emphasized the atmospheric effects of water and sky along the North Sea.
