Set of Nine George II Walnut Dining Chairs
Circa 1750

Each paper-scroll acanthus carved top rail above a pierced splat with flowerheads and padded seat above a shaoed apron centered by a flower in a bowl and flanked by acanthus leaves, the foliate-headed cabriole legs and ball-and-claw feet; together with a similar chair of a later date. 10 pieces.

Height 39 1/2 inches (100.4 cm), width 25 1/4 inches (64.3 cm), depth 17 1/2 inches (44.5 cm)

Each with previous restorations, sun fading, marks and scratches.


Chair 1: splat with repairs to rosettes and now with shims, sun fading to reverse, worming, later supports to seat rails.


Chair 2: Repaired break to right side of top rail and juncture of stile, underside with later supports to seat rails, possible repair to back left leg at below seat rail, worming, old marks and scratches, rubbing and losses to claws.


Chair 3: Age crack to middle left side of splat at juncture of top rail and now with shim, underside with later support to back seat rail, worming, old marks and scratches, chips and losses to claws.


Chair 4: Repaired breaks to top of stiles and juncture of top rail and now with patches, age cracks to top of splat at juncture of crest rail and now with shims and inpainting, extensive worming to seat rails and supports, back and front left and front right ears with replaced blocks, back legs with repairs to pad feet, old marks and scratches, chips and losses to claws.


Chair 5: Repaired break to right corner of top rail, underside with later supports, front left leg with later support to ear, back legs with repaired breaks to pad feet, front legs with chips and losses to claws, old marks and scratches.


Chair 6: Repaired breaks to top of stiles and juncture of top rail, repaired breaks to florets and and now with inpainting and shims, age cracks to base of splat at juncture of shoe, underside with later supports, age cracks to left side rail, front left side of apron lacking block, front right leg with shrinkage at joins, front right ear with later block, worming, repaired splices to pad feet, old marks and scratches, scuffs, chips and losses to claw feet.


Chair 7: Repaired break to top of right stile at juncture of top rail, crack to center right side of floret, age crack to base of splat at juncture of shoe, right stile with repair at juncture of back leg, underside with later supports, later supports to apron and back rail, ears with later blocks, back left ear with losses, worming, back legs with repaired splices to pad feet, old marks and scratches, scuffs, chips and losses to claw feet.


Chair 8: Repairs to top left and right stiles and juncture of toprail, left right leg with repaired break, underside with later support to back seat rail, apron with later blocks to ears, back left ear lacking block, worming, old marks and scratches, scuffs to feet.


Chair 9: Splat with age crack to center right side of floret and now with shim, age cracks to base of splat at juncture of shoe, , underside with losses to apron support, worming, old marks and scratches, scuffs to feet.


Chair 10: Modern reproduction, old marks and scratches, scuffs to feet.
