George I Gilt-Gesso Pier Mirror
First quarter 18th century, in the manner of John Belchier

Estate / Collection: Property from a Sutton Place South Private Collection

The beveled divided rectangular mirror plate within a foliate carved and molded frame, surmounted by a strapwork plume cresting centered by a cherub mask and wings within a part-pounced ground and flanked by acanthus C-scrolls, the apron centered by a shell.

Height 49 1/2 inches (125.7 cm), width 18 1/4 inches (46.4 cm)

(1)

The plume and shell-carved cresting are characteristics often associated with the work of John Belchier, a cabinet-maker recorded at The Sun, on the south side of St. Paul's Church Yard in 1717 until his death in 1753 at the age of seventy. In 1712, he established a workshop at Nottingham Court, Short’s Gardens in the parish of St. Giles in the Fields, London. In 1717, he moved his business to ‘The Sun’ in St. Paul’s Churchyard. Renowned for his expertise in mirror production, one of his documented trade labels indicates that he manufactured and supplied a variety of 'high-quality peer [sic] and chimney glasses, as well as glass sconces' (G. Beard and C. Gilbert, ed., Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, pp. 59-60). Among Belchier's most notable commissions are the mirrors provided to St. Paul's Cathedral and, during the period from 1722 to 1726, the pier glasses and furniture supplied to John Meller at Erddig in Clwyd, North Wales.

Sold for $6,080
Estimated at $2,000 - $4,000

NEW YORK, NY – Doyle's auction on October 16, 2024 drew international competition for Old Master & 19th Century Paintings, Drawings & Prints. Determined bidders on both sides of the Atlantic vied for landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and religious and mythological subjects by European artists from the Renaissance through the 19th century.

Highlighting the sale was an early 18th century nautical painting by Dutch artist Adriaen van Salm (1660-1720) that achieved $127,500. An exceptional example of “Pen Painting,” the work depicted a fascinating scene of Whalers in the Arctic. To read an essay by Specialist Elaine Stainton, click here.

Old Master drawings featured a beautifully executed rendering in brown ink and wash from the Collection of Eldo Netto depicting Archers in a Landscape that soared past its estimate to realize $32,000 amid speculation that it was possibly by the 17th century French master Claude Lorrain.
