Charles II Stumpwork, Silk and Metal Thread-Embroidered Cabinet
Circa 1665

The domed hinged lid with a hinged upper compartment lined with a hand-colored print of a hunting scene and a reflecting faceted mirror, the rectangular case with canted sides, hinged and opening to an interior formerly fitted with a mirror to the inside of the lid, salmon silk-lined compartments, pin cushion, pen tray, ink and sand containers, perfume bottles, the front with a pair of doors opening to a salmon velvet-lined panel sliding open to reveal secret drawers faced with silvered papers pounced with floral and geometric motifs, all over three short and one long silk-lined drawers, ; the lid depicting the figure of a moustachioed man with a hat standing beneath a canopy, the back panel depicting two scenes: Elijah being fed by ravens in the Kerith canyon (1 Kings 17:2-6) on the left and Abraham dismissing Hagar (Genesis 21)) on the right; appearing to retain the original wood carrying case that bears remnants of leather lining, later brass handles, the interior with later paper lining.

Height 11 1/2 inches (29.2 cm), width 9 1/4 inches (23.4 cm), depth 7 inches (17.7 cm); carrying case height 13 inches (33 cm), width 11 inches (27.9 cm), depth 9 inches (22.8 cm)

Needlework of this caliber was the pastime of wealthy, aristocratic women and professional embroiderers. Girls were taught sewing skills at an early age, progressing from samplers and as they became more proficient, engaging in much more elaborate needlework using three basic varieties: tent stitch, flat floss silk embroidery and stumpwork. Lanto Synge illustrates a similar dome-topped casket, Art of Embroidery, 2001, p. 134-5, fig. 120.

The rare survival of what is possibly the original traveling case for this casket has protected it from sun, air and dirt, helping to preserve some of the brightness and colors.
