Françoise-Athénaïs de Rochechouart de Mortemart, Marquise de Montespan, was the favorite of Louis XIV of France, by whom she became the mother of seven children, from 1667 until the early 1680s. Louis bought the estate at Clagny, near Versailles, as a retreat for her in 1667 and had it remodeled by Francois Mansart.
