NEW YORK, NY – Doyle held a successful auction of American Paintings & Prints on October 9, 2025. The sale presented works from the late 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, including fine examples of portraiture; still lifes; nautical paintings and Hudson River, Western and regional landscapes.

Highlighting the sale was a 1910 bronze of a seated Abraham Lincoln by Gutzon Borglum (1867-1941) that surpassed its estimate, selling for $89,400. Property of a California Private Collector, the bronze was a Maquette for the Lincoln Memorial in Newark, New Jersey, an early work by the artist who would later sculpt Mount Rushmore. Read More

American paintings featured Don Troiani’s (b. 1949) depiction of The Red Devils of the 5th New York, Duryée's Zouaves Stand Firm in the Face of Confederate Assault at Gaine's Mill, June 27, 1862, that far surpassed its estimate of $10,000-20,000 to achieve $51,200. During the Battle of Gaines’s Mill in Virginia, Colonel Abram Duryée’s famous “Zouaves” — the 5th New York Infantry Regiment, known as the “Red Devils” because of their red pantaloons and fierce fighting — held one of the bloodiest sectors of the line, securing their reputation for boldness and discipline. In 2024, Doyle auctioned another Civil War scene by Troiani, this one depicting the Battle of Antietam, that also far exceeded expectations, selling for $57,600.

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco was the successful purchaser of William Gropper’s (1897–1977) House Un-American Committee at $48,000, surpassing its estimate of $10,000-20,000 amid competitive bidding. Also known as Un-American Activities, the circa 1967 oil on canvas satirizes the infamous Congressional investigations into alleged subversive activities during the mid-20th century. Gropper was a socially conscious artist and political cartoonist known for his powerful statements on injustice, inequality and the human condition. The son of Jewish immigrants, he studied under Robert Henri and George Bellows and was described in 1937 by The New Yorker as “one of the most accomplished, as well as one of the most significant artists of our generation.” Together, the de Young in Golden Gate Park and the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park make up the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the largest public arts institution in the city and one of the largest art museums in the United States.
