To commemorate the First Battle of Copenhagen on April 2, 1801. The H.M.S. Edgar was commanded by Captain George Murray who led the fleet into action against the Danish fleet, with the Edgar being the first of the English ships to engage the enemy fleet. The Edgar's jolly boat conveyed messages back to Commodore Horatio Nelson's ship, the H.M.S. Elephant. The silver plaque to the reverse reads: This boat formerly in the possession of Adml. Sir George Murray was presented on 25th April 1854 to Dr. Benjn. Ridge, M.D. of Putney by his friend John Cottrell Esqr. of Chichester. Mr. Jno. Jas. Ridge Midshipman Uncle of Dr. Ridge, commanded her in the heat of the action and conveyed important dispatches from Captn. Murray to Commodore Nelson of the Elephant. The silver and silver plated bands to each side are engraved with the names of the twelve Ships-of-the-Line along with the other vessels allocated for the engagement by Admiral Sir Hyde Parker.
Height at back 5 1/2 inches (14 cm), length overall 18 inches (46 cm).
Sold together with New York State Department of Environmental Conservation License (ECL), with authorization to sell Interstate and Intrastate, expiration date of May 15, 2025

NEW YORK, NY – Doyle's auction on October 16, 2024 drew international competition for Old Master & 19th Century Paintings, Drawings & Prints. Determined bidders on both sides of the Atlantic vied for landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and religious and mythological subjects by European artists from the Renaissance through the 19th century.
Highlighting the sale was an early 18th century nautical painting by Dutch artist Adriaen van Salm (1660-1720) that achieved $127,500. Old Master drawings featured a beautifully executed rendering in brown ink and wash from the Collection of Eldo Netto depicting Archers in a Landscape that soared past its estimate to realize $32,000 amid speculation that it was possibly by the 17th century French master Claude Lorrain.
