Auction: 20th Century Abstraction / Latin American Art, Oct 11, 2023

  • Auction of 20th Century Abstraction on October 11, 2023 Saw Three New Auction Records
  • Painting by Theodoros Stamos from 1967 Tops the Sale
  • Consignments Are Currently Being Accepted for Future Auctions

NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle presented an auction of 20th Century Abstraction on October 11, 2023 showcasing abstract paintings, drawings, sculpture and prints spanning the 1940s through the end of the century. From the American Abstract Expressionists, as well as several prototypical artists that predated them, the auction documented the global evolution of abstraction within and beyond the fabled New York School; including Color Field artists, hard-edge abstraction, CoBrA Group and much more.

Theodoros Stamos
The top lot of the day was Theodoros Stamos’ The Scotch Sun Box that achieved $75,600. One of the youngest members of The Irascibles, Theodoros Stamos (1922-1997) was a prototypical figure in Abstract Expressionism. From 1967, The Scotch Sun Box is part of Stamos' Sun Box series which he began in 1962 (lot 44).

Jimmy Ernst
The son of Surrealist Max Ernst, Jimmy Ernst (1920-1984) was a member of the Irascibles, along with Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko and many others. Ernst further explored avant-garde art and music while working as the Director of Peggy Guggenheim’s Art of this Century Gallery. From 1965, Poet’s Sleep realized $50,400 at the sale. It is a prime example of the influence Gothic architecture had on Ernst’s work; intricate lines intersect, floating above vibrant fields of red and blue (lot 19).

Norman Bluhm
A sublime triptych by Norman Bluhm (1921-1999) sold for a strong $31,500, surpassing expectations. The work from 1959 showcases Norman Bluhm's energetic gestural abstraction. Bluhm studied architecture under Mies van der Rohe before moving to painting (lot 29).

Three New Auction Records
Competition at the sale drove World Auction Records for works by three artists -- Jacob Kainen (lot 74), Richard Kalina (lot 46) and Jerrold Ballaine (lot 48).
