NEW YORK, NY – Doyle’s auction of Latin American Art on October 11, 2023 attracted international competition that drove strong prices. The sale of paintings, drawings, sculpture and prints presented works by prominent artists representing Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean Islands.
Fernando Botero
Highlighting the sale were two unique works by Colombian artist Fernando Botero (1932-2023), best known for his signature depictions of figures in a large, exaggerated manner. Taking its cues from a bullfighting scene, 1991’s Rape of Europa was the top lot of the Latin American works, achieving $478,800 (lot 141).
From 2012, Botero’s A Family surpassed expectations, realizing $289,800. It employs charcoal to illustrate a charming day in the park, with the family’s porcine dog posted attentively in the lower corner (lot 142).
Competition at the sale drove exceptional prices for works by other artists, among them Angel Botello, Cundo Bermudez, Yoan Capote and Jose Maria Mijares.
The October 11 auction also offered 20th Century Abstraction. Read More
