Raoul Dufy

French, 1877-1953

Raoul Dufy was a French Fauvist painter recognized for his distinctive use of color and his depictions of modern leisure. Born in Le Havre in 1877, Dufy came to prominence in the early 20th century through his involvement with Fauvism, a movement defined by bold color and simplified forms. His work frequently portrays open-air concerts, sailing regattas, horse races, and other public gatherings, capturing the energy and elegance of contemporary life.

Though Dufy worked across media, including printmaking, textile design, and large-scale murals, he is best known for his paintings that project a strong decorative sensibility. His approach emphasized visual rhythm and an energetic application of color over narrative.

His works have been widely exhibited and collected, with major holdings at the Tate in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Dufy's influence can be seen across modern design and painting, and his work continues to resonate with collectors drawn to its balance of spontaneity and structure.
