Friedel Dzubas

German/American, 1915-1994

Friedel Dzubas was a German American painter known for his contributions to Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting. Born in Berlin in 1915, he studied art while working various jobs before fleeing Nazi Germany in 1939. After settling in New York, he became part of the postwar American art scene, working alongside key figures of the New York School.

Dzubas' work is recognized for its large-scale compositions, layered color, and structured abstraction. His paintings reflect a balance between gestural mark-making and formal clarity, positioning him within the broader evolution of mid-20th-century American abstraction.

His work is held in major institutional collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Guggenheim Museum. In the art market, his reputation has seen steady growth. At Doyle’s November 15, 2023 Post-War & Contemporary Art auction, Vilente Morning, 1979 sold for $201,600, marking the fourth highest price achieved for Dzubas at auction.
