NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle is honored to auction jewelry from the Estate of Sydney Roberts Shuman in select sales this spring. A prominent figure in New York's social and philanthropic circles, Sydney was raised in Bryn Mawr on Philadelphia’s Main Line and educated at The Shipley School followed by Bradford College in Massachusetts.
In 1992, following a lengthy courtship, Sydney married Stanley S. Shuman, who had two sons from a prior marriage. The couple’s forty-year romance was complemented by their brilliant partnership as major contributors to the welfare of New York. Sydney was previously married to Edwin J. Gould and had two sons of her own.
For nearly three decades, Sydney served as Council member, Trustee and Trustee Emerita of The Rockefeller University. She played a leading role in establishing Rockefeller’s Women & Science Initiative, as one of its four Founding Chairs. The institution recalled she “brought warmth and a sense of community to every occasion, and added much to the culture and community” of the university.
For over forty years, Sydney served as President, Board Chair and Honorary Chair of the Lenox Hill Neighborhood House, working to improve lives in the diverse communities it serves. She was also a member of the Women and Foreign Policy Advisory Council of the Council on Foreign Relations, a trustee of Second Stage Theater, and a council member of Villa I Tatti, The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies.
As a longtime seasonal resident of East Hampton and Vail, Colorado, Sydney was actively engaged in both communities. She and her husband generously supported the East Hampton Library and Guild Hall and were members of Atlantic Golf Club in Bridgehampton and Deepdale Golf Club in Manhasset, as well as Vail Valley Foundation in Vail, Colorado.
