Property from the Estate of Rosamonde K'ung Hwang

NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle is honored to auction property from the Estate of Rosamonde K’ung Hwang (孔令儀, K'ung Ling-i), the daughter of H. H. K’ung and Soong Ai-ling, whose families were among the most influential in 20th century China. Her father, H. H. K’ung, was a prominent banker, industrialist and statesman who served as China’s Minister of Finance, Vice Premier and Premier. Once regarded as the richest man in China, he was a 75th generation descendant of the philosopher Confucius. Her mother, Soong Ai-ling, was the eldest of the celebrated Soong sisters. The younger sisters, Soong Mei-ling and Soong Ching-ling, married two of the most consequential figures in modern Chinese history: Chiang Kai-shek and Sun Yat-sen, respectively. In 1948, Rosamonde moved to New York, where her parents and other members of the family also settled. She remained there for the rest of her life, devoted to her family and, later, caring for her aunt, Mme. Chiang Kai-shek.

Property from the Estate of Rosamonde K’ung Hwang offers an evocative glimpse into a life spanning two continents during a pivotal era in history. The Estate features an extensive collection of Chinese export and American silver, highlighted by an exquisite high-karat gold Chinese tea service comprising tea bowls, sauce dishes and chopstick rests.
