NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle held a successful auction of Russian Works of Art on April 21, 2026 that far surpassed expectations amid international bidding. Showcasing exceptional objects spanning the 17th to the 20th centuries, the sale featured Fabergé, enamels, silver, porcelain and icons from American collections and estates.
Ovchinnikov Silver & Enamel Tea & Coffee Service
Highlighting the sale was a Russian silver and champlevé enamel tea and coffee service by Ovchinnikov, dated 1877, that achieved an impressive $83,050. Pavel Ovchinnikov (1830-1888) was a leading Moscow silversmith and enameler who rose from humble origins to head one of Imperial Russia’s most prestigious workshops. He specialized in richly enameled tableware, icons and decorative pieces for an elite clientele, including the Russian Imperial Court, helping to elevate polychrome enamel into a defining feature of Russian luxury art.
Regimental Silver Trophy
A scarce silver and marble regimental trophy with maker’s mark KA, St. Petersburg, circa 1882, soared past its estimate of $6,000-8,000, selling for $70,350. Surmounted by a finely modeled figure of an officer in the Izmailovsky Life Guards Regiment, it features an inscription dedicated to Leontii Petrovich Kandaurov, with engraved facsimile signatures of the regiment’s officers. Kandaurov served as colonel from 1874 to 1882 in this elite regiment of the Imperial Guard, which distinguished itself in numerous campaigns.
Carved Wood Bread and Salt Plate
An elaborately carved wooden bread-and-salt plate by the K. Sholtz Workshop, Moscow, dated 1909, sold for $60,800, many times its $3,000-5,000 estimate. The tradition of greeting honored guests with bread and salt is one of Russia’s oldest and most symbolic customs. This presentation plate is inscribed to Emperor Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna from the Moscow Merchant Society, marking an official Imperial visit. It was acquired in Russia by Armand Hammer in the 1920s and has remained in a private collection since 1934.
Fabergé Imperial Presentation Cigarette Case
An exquisite Fabergé jeweled silver-gilt and guilloché enamel Imperial presentation cigarette case by workmaster August Hollming, St. Petersburg, 1908-1917, inventory no. 1773, realized $54,400, more than doubling its $15,000-25,000 estimate. It was one of three similar cases commissioned by the Cabinet of His Imperial Majesty from Fabergé’s St. Petersburg branch. Records suggest the first case was presented to Nicholas II for use as a personal gift. As inventory no. 1773 appears first on Fabergé’s invoice, it may be the case given to the Emperor for use as a personal gift.
