NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle's auction of Post-War & Contemporary Art on November 20, 2024 presented important paintings and sculpture by some of the 20th and 21st centuries' most prominent artists. Encompassing works by American, European, Latin American and Asian artists, the offerings spanned artistic movements from Abstract Expressionism, Op Art, Pop Art and Minimalism, moving through Color School and Photorealism to Contemporary Realism and works by emerging artists.
Claudio Bravo
Highlighting the sale was Chilean artist Claudio Bravo’s Paquete Rojo Dormi (Red Package Asleep) that sailed past its estimate of $60,000-90,000 to achieve $229,100. From 2005, the work is a fantastic example of Bravo's hyperrealistic package paintings. At a large scale and in bright crimson, Bravo employs techniques of the Old Masters as well as the Photorealists to achieve this trompe l'oeil composition.
Joan Semmel
A rare and early abstract painting from 1961, Movement finds Semmel in the early years of her practice. A busy, all-over composition, this work precedes the nude self-portraits Semmel would begin in the early 70s, moving her away from abstract painting. The work doubled its estimate of n$10,000-15,000, selling for $28,800.
Mary Bauermeister
A fantastic example of her lens box series, VIR-TUOSE (or next generation of virtuosi), 1965, is densely populated with wood and glass elements, further overlaid with Bauermeister's ink and pencil drawings. Bauermeister hosted several of the original Fluxus performances in her Cologne, Germany studio, and the artist would continue experimenting with her practice, encompassing music, writing and performance alongside her contemporary sculpture.
