NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle's successful auction of Post-War & Contemporary Art on May 8, 2024 saw competitive bidding drive strong results for paintings and sculpture by prominent and emerging artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Offered together with Impressionist & Modern Art, the sale total topped $3.7 million.
Encompassing works by American, European, Latin American and Asian artists, the offerings spanned artistic movements from Abstract Expressionism, Op Art, Pop Art and Minimalism, moving through Color School and Photorealism to Contemporary Realism and works by emerging artists.
Sol LeWitt – Sold for $127,500
A pioneering Minimalist artist, Sol LeWitt contended that a concept is the substance of art, and not the realized work itself. From 1996, Squiggly Brushstrokes is a large scale work from LeWitt's 1990s series of gouaches on paper. Though the work is a busy and colorful abstract image, LeWitt's concepts separate his work from the Abstract Expressionists.
Vicente Manansala – Sold for $114,800
One of the great modern artists of the Philippines, Vicente Manansala received grants early in his career that allowed him to travel to Paris and study under Fernand Leger. Represented by an untitled work from 1957, Manansala depicts a glowing church exterior, showing influences of Cubism.
Other Noteworthy Results
The May 8 auction also achieved strong results for works by Friedel Dzubas, Janet Fish, Ibrahim Hussein and Yayoi Kusama, among many others.
