NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle held a successful auction of English & Continental Silver on May 21, 2024 showcasing fine examples of English, Irish, German, Austrian, French and Italian silver by prominent makers of the 18th through 20th centuries.
The Duke of Hamilton Ambassadorial Service
Highlighting the sale was an offering of rare pieces from the famed Duke of Hamilton Ambassadorial Service that achieved $48,960, far surpassing expectations. In 1806, Alexander, the 10th Duke of Hamilton (1767-1854) was appointed Ambassador for King George III to the Court of Empress Catherine the Great in St. Petersburg, Russia. In order to represent the British Crown in a style befitting this important position, a magnificent silver dinner service comprising 278 pieces was commissioned from London silversmith Paul Storr. While officially ordered by the Crown through the Jewel Office, these great ambassadorial services were typically awarded to the recipient on their retirement from the post. The service remained in the family of the Dukes of Hamilton until it was sold in 1919. Currently, the largest portion of the Hamilton Ambassadorial Service resides in the White House where it continues to be used on State occasions.
Royal Silver
Featured in the sale was a group of silver with Royal provenance. Read an essay by Todd Sell on these fascinating pieces.
