NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle held a successful auction of English & Continental Silver on January 24, 2024 that attracted competitive bidding from both sides of the Atlantic. Spanning the 18th through 20th centuries, the sale featured fine examples of English, German, Austrian, Danish, French and Italian silver by prominent makers.
Highlighting the auction was a pair of elaborately decorated William IV sterling silver wine coolers by London silversmith Benjamin Smith from 1834 that achieved $35,200, surpassing their estimate of $20,000-30,000. Among Benjamin Smith’s most important achievements was the fabled Jamaica Service of 1803 in the Royal Collection whose stunning open-work vine borders are remarkably similar to the grapevine decoration in this exceptional pair of coolers.
Consignments are currently being accepted for future auctions. We invite you to contact us for a complimentary auction evaluation. Our Specialists are always available to discuss the sale of a single item or an entire collection.
