NEW YORK, NY — International competition drove outstanding results at Doyle's May 14, 2026 auction of English & Continental Furniture & Decorative Arts. Showcased were a broad selection of exceptional furniture, porcelain, mirrors, clocks, chandeliers, tapestries and rugs from prominent estates and collections.
Property from the Collection of a Distinguished Westchester Family
Highlighting the sale was a group of important 18th century French furniture from the Collection of a Distinguished Westchester Family that surpassed expectations amid trans-Atlantic competition. Leading the collection was an exceptional Louis XV ormolu-mounted tulipwood, kingwood, amaranth, and bois de bout marquetry commode by Jacques-Philippe Carel (1688–1755) that sailed past its $20,000-30,000 estimate to sell for an impressive $54,400. Jacques-Philippe Carel, maître in 1723, supplied furniture to the French royal court, the Marquise de Pompadour, and the daughters of Louis XV at Versailles, as well as to the Swedish court and the Prince of Württemberg. The piece closely relates to two commodes by Carel in the Frick Collection, New York, and also bore the distinguished provenance of the French Rothschild family.
Also drawing strong competition from the same Collection were two elegant pairs of console tables, each dramatically surpassing expectations. A pair of Louis XVI carved and painted wood parcel-gilt console tables, possibly by Philippe Poirier, maître in 1765, and executed after designs by Joseph Bélanger, soared to $32,000 against an estimate of $8,000-12,000. Equally successful was a pair of Louis XVI painted and parcel-gilt console tables, possibly North Italian, that realized $28,800, nearly tripling its $7,000-10,000 estimate. Seating furniture from the Collection also achieved exceptional results, with a set of four Louis XVI carved giltwood fauteuils à la reine soaring over their $4,000-6,000 estimate to achieve $21,760.
