NEW YORK, NY -- Determined bidders drove impressive results at Doyle’s January 29, 2026 auction of English & Continental Furniture & Decorative Arts. Bringing together several distinguished private collections, the sale offered an exciting opportunity to acquire works of the highest quality across the fields of French and European furniture, clocks, and works of art.
An important private collection of French clocks was highlighted by a superb Louis XV ormolu cartel clock, circa 1755, by Louis-Michel Hardel that doubled its $8,000-12,000 estimate, selling for $23,040. Received as Maître Horloger in 1753, Parisian clockmaker Hardel supplied high-end clock movements to the influential bronzeworking ateliers that defined the Rococo style, such as Jacques Caffieri, Philippe Caffieri and Jean-Joseph de Saint-Germain. Also outperforming expectations was a large and rare Louis XVI patinated bronze elephant clock, circa 1780, estimated at $6,000-9,000 that sold for $15,360. These remarkable timepieces exemplify the highest standards of Parisian bronze casting and clockmaking of the second half of the 18th century.
