NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle's auction of English & Continental Furniture & Decorative Arts on May 21, 2025 showcased a broad selection of elegant furniture, porcelain, mirrors, clocks, chandeliers, tapestries and rugs from prominent estates and collections across the country.
Highlighting the sale was a pair of late George III terrestrial and celestial table globes by Dudley Adams that far exceeded expectations, selling for $25,600 to a private collector. Dated 1809 and 1810, the 12-inch diameter globes were consigned by the Estate of Alexander Mellon Laughlin, an investment adviser and former chairman of the board of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. Dudley Adams (1762–1830) was a prominent London globemaker and scientific instrument maker during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His globes were known for their detailed cartography, showcasing trade winds, rhumb lines and the tracks of significant maritime expeditions. He was appointed globemaker to King George III, a prestigious position previously held by his father, George Adams, Sr.
Also performing far beyond expectations were a group of Roman micromosaics from the Grand Tour. A circa 1860 micromosaic inlaid marble top gueridon depicting famous Roman monuments doubled its $10,000-15,000 estimate, selling for $20,480. A lot of eleven gilt-bronze framed miniature micromosaic plaques, circa 1800, attributed to Giacomo Raffaelli (1753-1837), depicting doves and classical scenes, flew past their $2,500-4,500 estimate to achieve $23,040 from a private collector.
