NEW YORK, NY -- Competitive international bidding drove strong results at Doyle's two-day auction of Asian Works of Art on September 17-18, 2024. Day 2 of the sale showcased Decorative Asian Art, including porcelains, bronzes, jades, snuff bottles, pottery, scholar’s objects, furniture and paintings from prominent collections and estates.
Chinese Enameled Porcelain Figure of Weituo
The top lot of the day was an unusually large Chinese enameled porcelain figure of the guardian deity Weituo that sold for $70,350, many times its estimate of $4,000-6,000. Property from the Irving and Joan Getz Collection, the 19th century figure was of exceptional quality and condition which, combined with its rare size, attracted the attention of collectors and dealers alike. Measuring 45 1/2 inches in height, the colorful figure would likely have been originally paired with a companion, each intended to flank a doorway.
