GERTRUDE VANDERBILT WHITNEY
Sculptor, art patron and collector Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney (1875-1942) founded the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York in 1931. Her most famous sculpture, Buffalo Bill - The Scout, depicting the legendary rough rider on horseback, was created in 1924 for the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming. Her son, Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney, funded the establishment of the Whitney Museum of Western Art in her honor at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in 1959.
