Novelty Silver Plated Hildesheim Crater
Model Wine Cooler
20th Century
Modelled after an example from antiquity, of crater-form, the body chased with putti, flowers and griffins, on stepped wooden base. Height overall 9 1/4 inches.
The model for this wine cooler was discovered in 1868 in the German town of Hildesheim and formed part of a Roman treasure of 70 pieces dating to the 1st century BC. Soon after the discovery, the famed house of Christofle reproduced the pieces, including the crater, in electroplating to capture the details from the original pieces.
The original Hildesheim Crater is in the Pergamon Museum, Berlin and the Christofle example in the Musee d'Orsay, Paris.
