NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle was honored to present Property from the Collection of Barbara K. and Ira A. Lipman on November 16, 2022. Barbara and Ira Lipman

Ira K. Lipman was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, on November 15, 1940. He attended Little Rock Central High School, where in 1957, the “Little Rock Nine” became the first African American students to enter the school. At 16, Mr. Lipman served as an inside source for NBC correspondent John Chancellor. Mr. Lipman’s accounts reached a nationwide audience via Chancellor reporting on the racial tension erupting at Little Rock High School following its desegregation

Mr. Lipman graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1960 and founded Guardsmark, one of the world’s premier private security companies, in 1963. His company’s guiding principles – truth, courage and judgment – carried over into his relationships.

Barbara Kelly and Ira A. Lipman were married in July of 1970. She was a trailblazer in early childhood education, having completed her undergraduate degree in her early 40s and then getting a master’s degree. Barbara and Ira enjoyed exploring new subjects, which led to a lifelong interest in collecting prints, rare books and more. Lipman’s interest in American history influenced his rare book collection. The lots in this collection reflect his interest in George Washington and the American Revolution, the Civil War and the subsequent Civil Rights Movement, Winston Churchill, literature and fine art.

The Lipman philanthropic efforts included endowing the Ira A. Lipman Professorship in Journalism and Civil and Human Rights at Columbia and the Ira A. Lipman Professorship at The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He founded the John Chancellor Award for Excellence in Journalism at Columbia in 1995. Barbara established the Barbara K. Lipman Early Childhood School Research Institute at the University of Memphis in 1985.
