Lot Details

Lot 153
HUMBOLDT, ALEXANDER VON Essai Politique sure le Royaume de la Nouvelle-Espagne
. With the accompanying Atlas Geographique et Physique du Royaume de la Nouvelle-Espagne, fonde sur des Observations Astronomiques, des Mesures Trigonometriques et des Nivellemens Barometriques. Paris: F. Schoell, 1811. The atlas: original marbled boards, 22 1/2 x 16 1/2 inches (57 x 41 cm); [iv], [1]-4 pp. and 19 plates of engraved maps, views, and geological profiles on stubs, printed on heavy paper, 10 of them double-page, some views and profiles in sepia, bronze, and brown aquatint. The text volume: period calf, 13 x 10 inches (33.5 x 25 cm); 92, 904 pp., errata leaf. An old dampstain with a tideline at about mid-page affects the entirety of the atlas, the spine of which is perished and the binding worn. The text volume has the spine partially detached, and is worn and quite foxed. The title-page to the second part of the text volume is lacking; pp. 348/9 is repeated in its stead. Sold as-is.

Includes "Carte Generale du Royaume de la Nouvelle Espagne." This map is the most up-to-date geographic depiction of Texas, California and the rest of Mexico, and it became the prototype rendering for much of the region for the next several decades. Carl Wheat called it a 'truly magnificent cartographic achievement' Howes H786, Graff 2009, Streeter Texas 1042n, WCB 7a:3a:2.
