NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle held a successful sale in the popular Fine Art auction category on September 14, 2022. The sale offered a range of affordable paintings, prints and sculpture by prominent artists spanning the late 19th through the 20th centuries. Exciting opportunities abound in this popular category for seasoned buyers and new collectors alike!
With competitive international bidding, the sale totaled a successful $345,846, surpassing the pre-sale estimate of $177,800-291,100, with an impressive 94% sold by lot and 100% sold by value.
Adelaide Cole Chase
Highlighting the sale were two lovely portraits by American artist Adelaide Cole Chase (1868-1944) that far exceeded their respective estimates. A circa 1898 portrait of Mrs. Hollis French achieved $17,640, and a 1916 portrait of Rue Elizabeth, the daughter of Hollis French, realized $16,380.
Chase was an American portrait painter from Boston, Massachusetts. She studied under her father, artist J. Foxcroft Cole, before attending the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Chase exhibited throughout her career at the Society of American Artists in New York, the Philadelphia Academy and other prestigious institutions.
Strong prices were also achieved for works by Victor Leon Charreton, Leon Dabo, Bela Kadar, Roger Muhl, Saul Steinberg and Elihu Vedder, among many others.
