NEW YORK, NY -- Works by Vietnamese artists soared amid international competition at Doyle's auction of Fine Art on February 23, 2022. Showcased were a wide range of affordable paintings, prints and sculpture spanning the Post-War years to the present day by established and emerging artists. Exciting opportunities abound in this popular category for seasoned buyers and new collectors alike!
With competitive international bidding, the sale totaled a successful $612,320, doubling its pre-sale estimate of $205,900-319,500, with a strong 84% sold by lot and 100% sold by value.
Three paintings by two of Vietnam’s highly regarded master Modernists, Le Pho and Vu Cao Dam, achieved the highest prices of the day, far exceeding their high estimates. Both artists studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Hanoi, then under the direction of Victor Tardieu before setting off to study in Paris, with the Le Pho attending the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and Vu Cao Dam at the École du Louvre. Influenced by the Impressionists, Post-Impressionists and early Modernists, both artists maintained strong ties to their heritage in which their work is steeped.
The top lot of the sale was a 1970 painting titled Divinite by Vu Cao Dam that achieved a stunning $126,000, many times its estimate of $25,000-35,000. Also realizing exceptional results were Le Pho’s Le Vase Chinois estimated at $25,000-35,000 that sold for $113,400 and Les Poppies estimated at $15,000-25,000 that fetched $75,600.
