Modern & Contemporary Art
Both a highly respected gallerist as well as a celebrated artist, Betty Parsons had an incredible eye. Parsons championed the work of Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, Agnes Martin and others, while also creating her own sculptural driftwood assemblages. Woodpecker, one of three works in this sale, is an excellent representation of Parsons’ raw materials and bold use of color.
One of the Dominican Republic’s most important artists, Ramon Oviedo has been referred to as “the Dominican Picasso.” He draws from Expressionist and Surrealist influences, creating vividly bold abstract forms. El Ultimo Habitat/Embalado showcases Oviedo’s complex mixed media compositions.
Following in the tradition of Edward Hopper and George Tooker, Jane Dickson thoughtfully documents the energy and motion of New York City. As a part of Colab Projects throughout the late 70s and early 80s, Dickson was key to groundbreaking exhibitions such as the Times Square Show in 1980. With the 1986 painting Tilt-O-Whirl, Dickson creates a fun yet mysterious scene against an inky nighttime backdrop.
Best known for his life-sized white plaster figures, George Segal documents the human form, depicting people in their daily routines. The large scale 1966 portrait Pam is a rare work on paper which was exhibited at the legendary Sidney Janis Gallery.
The sale features colorful art glass by prominent American, French, and British makers, including Tiffany Furnaces, Quezal, Daum, Burgun Schverer et Cie., and Thomas Webb & Sons.
