Chelsea Porcelain 'Fable-Decorated'
Teabowl and a Saucer
Circa 1752-1755, attributed to Jeffreyes Hammet O'Neale
The octagonal teabowl paint with a continuous vignette of The Fox and The Crow; the shaped circular saucer with a vignette from The Wolf, The Lamb and The Goat, iron-red line rims. Diameter of saucer 4 1/2 inches (11.3 cm).
Provenance:
With Simon Spero, London, April 1986, the teabowl.
With Steppes Hill Farm Antiques, Kent, June 1989, the saucer.
The present subjects are based on engraved illustrations found in The Fables of Aesop paraphras'd in verse with annotations by John Ogilby. Both the image on the teabowl and the image on the saucer correspond to engravings by the Bohemian artist Wenceslaus Hollar which are found in Ogilby's 1665 folio.
The wiley fox on the cup desires a piece of cheese held in the crow's beak. Through flattery he coaxes the bird to sing and wins his prize. On the saucer the parable tells how a once destitute lamb stays true to his adopted goat mother and avoids the wolf's ruse to separate him from his protector. For an octagonal teabowl with this subject, see The British Museum, object no. 1887,0307,II.76.
