Sèvres Porcelain Ribbon-Decorated 'Frises à Ruban' Pommade Pot and Cover (Pot à Pommade et Couvercle)
Circa 1763, blue interlaced L's enclosing the date letter K and painter's mark of a heart for Fontelliau, incised potter's 00 mark
Cylindrical, the slightly domed cover with ranunculus finial, finely painted with interlaced blue zig-zag and undulating burgundy ribbons, edged by berried laurel. Height 3 1/2 inches (8.9 cm).
For a strikingly similar yet variantly decorated solitaire, see Christie's, New York, 23 May 2000, lot 163. Here the blue chevron band has a triple gold stripe as compared to the double gold stripe on the present example.
Antoine-Louis Fontelliau (1734-1789) was a painter of flowers and ornaments and an enameller of ground colors at Sèvres active 1753-1782.
