Attributed to Jacques de Gheyn II
The Apostle Matthew
Brown ink and wash on paper, tondo
Diameter 5 inches (12.7cm)
This drawing relates to an engravng by Zacharias Dolendo (1561- c. 1604) of St. Matthew (Hollstein 38), after one of a series of drawings of the Apostles now in the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam. Although the Boijmans drawings have been thought traditionally to be by Jacqes de Gheyn II, it has been suggested that they are in fact the work of that artist's father, Jacques de Gheyn I; and that this drawing is a work by his son, Jacques de Gheyn II after the Dolendo engraving. Cf A. Th. van Deursen et al., Jacques de Gheyn II: Drawings, exhibition catalogue (Rotterdam, 1986), no 1, illus.
