By Robin de Montigny of the original painting, ca. 1785

Born in the village of Rolle in the Swiss canton of Vaud, Louis Auguste Brun (1758-1815) is best known today for the landscapes and portraits that he painted at the French court during the 1780s. The two portraits offered here are later copies after the original paintings executed in 1780 while the artist was still living in his native Vaud. Depicting an upper-class couple of that region who were his patrons, they were the artist's earliest known equestrian portraits, which became the pattern for a number of similar images of the Royal Family and higher nobility of France, including two magnificent equestrian portraits of Marie-Antoinette, one of which is still at Versailles.
