Lot Details

Lot 82
Calligraphic manuscript on vellum, colophon leaf with the monogrammatic device of Marie Angel, annotated "pinxit 1960." Original tan laced parchment, the upper cover with a design of a hatching dinosaur rendered in ink and colors, slipcased. 10 1/2 x 9 inches (27 x 22.5 cm); 16 vellum ff. (including blanks): title leaf; 8 magnificent renderings of dinosaurs (each labeled on the opposite page); and colophon leaf. Minute foxing to upper cover, in all an immaculate manuscript. Ms. Angel has laid-in to the front a list of the types of dinosaurs illustrated, with the locations in Britain where their remains have been found (this on paper), and a minuscule hand-painted and illuminated Christmas card for 1961.

Marie Angel (1923-2010) was one of the foremost British calligraphers and illustrators, producing manuscripts with superb penmanship and incredibly delicate single-hair brush miniatures. Her original work is rare on the market, though institutionally Harvard, the Hunt Botanical Institute, the Victoria and Albert and others hold examples.
