Set of Four George III Mahogany Side Chairs
Circa 1760
Each foliate-carved serpentine toprail above a pierced Gothic-arched back and overupholstered seat raised on molded square legs joined by stretchers. Height 38 inches (96.5 cm), width 23 inches (58.4 cm), depth of seat 18 inches (45.7 cm).

Provenance:
Vernay & Jussel, Inc., New York.

The design for these chairs is based on a similar model in plate XIV from Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1st ed., 1753.

Additional Notes & Condition Report

Previous restorations, pierced brackets later, old marks and scratches, scuffs to legs, feet and stretchers. Chair 1: old repaired break with patch to top of right stile below juncture of top rail, back of backrest sunfaded, back rail with old reinforcment, repaired break to inside of left side stretcher at juncture of leg, back left foot spliced; Chair 2: top of right stile with repaired break at juncture with toprail, back and side rails reinforced, back left foot with 6" splice; Chair 3: scroll to top left of toprail later, shoe to backrest loose, backrest slightly sunfaded, front and back seat rails reinforced, back left leg with repaired break below juncture of back stretcher; Chair 4: age cracks to bottom of splat and now with shims, side seat rails replaced, back seat rail reinforced, back of back left leg with 4" splice and now with plugs.
