BOURKE-WHITE, MARGARET (1904-1971) [Sierra Madre Mountains, California],
, possibly vintage. Toned gelatin silver print with black ink borders, 10 x 13 3/8 inches (257 x 341 mm) dry-mounted to card, the mount verso with the "Photo by Margaret Bourke-White" stamp in red, unsigned. In raking light numerous original retouchings are noted, two small areas at upper left show a small stain or a toner issue, a few small scratches or abrasions appear, and the mount is quite foxed (and likely trimmed), though the image is apparently unaffected. Possible fluorescence of the mount noted under ultra-violet (optical brighteners in regular papers were in use in the 1920s, though not incorporated into photo papers until the early 1950s), the image apparently not fluorescent.
One of Bourke-White's finest landscape photographs, this appeared on the dust jacket of the original edition of her autobiography Portrait of Myself. The image is quite uncommon in commerce. Callahan, pp. 50-51.
