CALDWELL, ERSKINE Tobacco Road.
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1932. First edition with the Scribner's seal and "A" to copyright leaf. Publisher's gilt stamped orange cloth with mint-green endpapers, in the original pictorial dust jacket. 7 1/2 x 5 inches; 241 pp. The jacket price clipped, the spine slightly darkened, a few minor chips to tips far from text, the cloth bright and the text clean, a superlative copy overall.
A very fine copy in the scarce jacket of Caldwell's influential novel about impoverished Georgia sharecroppers. The phrase "Tobacco Road" entered the American consciousness with the publication of the novel and came to signify the hardships of the American South during the Great Depression. The novel was made into a long running Broadway show and a 1941 film directed by John Ford. This copy sold Christie's, 23 June 2011, lot 287.
