Contemporary paper backed blue boards, slipcase. 7 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches; xlviii, 390, [1] pp.; [iv] 432; [iv] 468 pp.; [iv] 432 pp.; [iv], 556 pp., with the ad leaf at end of volume I, issued without half-titles. Discreetly refurbished with some paper replacement to spines, other wear and small losses, contemporary ink ownership signature to titles, light foxing and a few minor stains including at the end of volume II and to titles of volumes III & IV, small marginal worm hole to last two leaves of volume V. Please note that leaves K6 and L6 have some long tears that reach nearly to the gutter (this note added 6/15).
Fanny Burney's third novel, uncommon in original boards. The list of subscriber's in volume I includes many important contemporary female authors such as Hester Thrale, Anne Radcliffe, Hannah More, Maria Edgeworth and also 20 year old Jane Austen, this thought to be the first time her name appears in print.
