Lot Details

Lot 9
John Barrymore
American, 1882-1942
Head Studies: Three Works
Ink and graphite on paper, framed together
Sight of largest 4 1/2 x 3 3/4 inches (11.4 x 9.5 cm)
A letter of authenticity written by Will Fowler is attached to the backing of the work. Dated November 4, 1965 and numbered ST 8-6215, the letter reads: Being the last authority of John Barrymore sketches, I must describe the three following:/1. Right side profile; grey pen. Heroic; four buttons on shirt.; "AX-1336 above Cross, top left side; "Balboa" behind neck, right.../2: Full face. Pencil. Bald headed man with whisp of hair going to left. No eyeballs, just staring. The beard is low like a goat's horns. The ear, on left, stands out. This is rare in a Barrymore sketch in that Mr. Barrymore usually sketches profiles. 3: Same profile, but Barrymore made himself up as a Svengali. (Heavy pen). This was a time in his life when he was escaping from the world. Nevertheless, this is a great, truly, important sketch. Notice the dropping neck, the double lips while in character. There, here, seems to be a fight with death./Mr. Lansing, there is a problem here wherein how you should desire these Barrymore sketches on your wall... But I bet you will have the thing figured out all the way./For your edification, I am the last authority re JB sketches. I can not be fooled./Do what you wish with these./Will Fowler/P.S. In Holograph, this letter is pure authentication re J. Barrymore sketches./Will Fowler
