ORTELIUS, ABRAHAM Asiae Nova Descriptio.
[Antwerp: circa 1575-79]. Second plate with lowercase "f" to La Farfana at upper right. Engraved map with hand-coloring. Latin text on verso. Neatlines 14 5/8 x 19 1/8 inches (37.3 x 48.5 cm) with wider margins; matted and framed. Repair on verso to a tear at lower center, the central fold strengthened.
Based on Ortelius wall map of 1569, this was the standard map of Asia for more than forty years. The map features a famous misprojection of Japan and Southeast Asia, a distended Arabian Peninsula, Luzan is missing from the Philippine islands, and the mythical Cayamay Lacus is present in southern China. The plate was re-engraved in 1575, removing the privelige to the lower right corner, the town of Ara above Aden, and changing the capitalization to La farfana. The map was published in a circa 1575 Latin edition of Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, considered the first modern atlas. Broecke 7.
