ORTELIUS, ABRAHAM Europae.
Antwerp: circa 1579. Engraved map with hand-coloring. Latin text on verso. Neatlines 13 1/2 x 18 1/4 inches (34.5 x 46 cm) with wider margins; matted and framed. The center fold strengthened and a tear from the upper margin near the center repaired on verso, a few stray spots and soiling to margins under mat.

Ortelius finely engraved map of Europe, based on Mercator's 1554 map. To the east, the map extends to Iceland, a portion of Greenland is shown as is a tiny part of Labrador. An early impression with the crossed-arrows watermark. The map was published in a circa 1575 Latin edition of Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, considered the first modern atlas.
