[WAR of 1812] Set of four lithographs depicting the battle between the U.S.S. Chesapeake and H.M.S. Shannon.

King, R.N., painted by John Christian Schetky and lithographed by Louis Haghe, numbered 1-4. 15 x 18 inches (38 x 46 cm); matted and framed. Heavy foxing to the second and third print, spotting to the others, one with visible mat toning affecting imprint, not examined out of frames.
A very rare set of views depicting the brief but fierce naval battle between U.S.S. Chesapeake and H.M.S. Shannon on June 1st, 1813. The battle took place just outside Boston Harbor with many shocked and horrified onlookers. The Chesapeake was captained by James Lawrence who was mortally wounded in the exchange and famously said as he was carried below deck "Don't give up the ship!" Lawrence remained on the ship as it was towed to Halifax as a prize and died upon arrival. Dedicated to the victorious captain of the Shannon, Sir Philip Bowes Vere Broke, the prints show the The H.M.S. Shannon commencing the battle with the American Frigate Chesapeake; The American Frigate Chesapeake Crippled and thrown into utter disorder by the two first broadsides fired; the Boarding of the American Frigate Chesapeake after a Canonade of Five Minutes; and The H.M.S. Shannon Leading her Prize ... into Halifax Harbour. The plates are not dated but the Yale Center for British Art owns a set in the original printed wrappers dated 1830.
