Philadelphia: Rice, Rutter & Co., 1870. Three octavo volumes. Contemporary full (deluxe issue?) pebbled dark brown morocco, the covers and spines elaborately tooled in gilt and with raised bands. gilt turn ins, all edges gilt. 10 3/8 x 6 3/4 inches (26.5 x 17.5 cm); with 101 lithographed plates (the plate list calling for 100), most hand-colored, a few printed in color. The text block detaching from binding on Volume I and with a short split to joint and tear into lettering panel, the other upper hinges cracked, toning to the text, stray spotting and small stains to some plates but most clean.
An attractive set, vibrantly colored. This is the issue without Hall's name and calling for 100 plates on the title pages (but 99 called for on plate lists). Plate counts frequently vary in this work: this set is with 101 plates and containing the additional portraits in volume II being Billy Bowlegs and John Ross. Howes M129; Sabin 43411.
