Cambridge, Mass.: The Riverside Press, 1902. One of 1,000 sets of the "Edition de Luxe." 24 volumes extended to 33 with the addition of many hundreds of plates, portraits, and autographs, full dark blue levant (stamped "Thomas W. Best," but likely done for him by The Harcourt Bindery). 8 1/2 x 6 inches (22 x 15 cm); various paginations, extra-illustrated by Thomas W. Best; the letters include George Catlin, Thomas Mifflin, etc. etc., and many hundreds of portraits and plates, all inlaid to size. Spines dry and rubbed, joints weak but holding; Together with RHODES, JAMES FORD. History of the United States from the Compromise of 1850. New York: MacMillan, 1910. 7 volumes extended to 13, three-quarters red morocco, with the addition of several hundred plates, portraits, and autographs, an inserted leaf at the start of Volume 1 stating "Extra illustrated with contemporaneously engraved portraits of prominent persons mentioned in this history," this attestation signed by Rhodes, with a presentation by him on the preceding leaf. 8 1/2 x 6 inches (22 x 15 cm); various paginations, extra-illustrated by the author. Spines very worn. These two sets sold as-is, not subject to return.
