Lot 14
BURR, AARON Autograph letter signed to Ephraim Kirby.
New York: 20 July 1801. One page autograph letter signed "A. Burr" with the address panel in Burr's hand and with his franking signature. Framed open to 9 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches (23 x 38 cm); framed. Remnant of old mounting along gutter, usual folds, remnants of wax seal, not examined out of frame.

Burr here writes to Ephraim Kirby of Litchfield, Connecticut "cautiously, for you have taught me to distrust your post office." The letter regards a delay in Kirby's commission, likely to be Supervisor of Internal Revenue for Connecticut. Kirby is best remembered for his 1789 compilation of law reports in the United States, the first of its kind, and was acting as the director of the Western Reserve in Ohio at the time of his death in 1804.
