[ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPTS] Two very fine excised historiated initials from choirbooks.
The first, an initial L, with a portrait of a robed, tonsured ecclesiatic with hands raised in prayer; The second the young sceptered Christ on a verdured field, the uprights of the "A" lettered in white "IHS" and "IHS BE." Both likely 15th century, possibly Italian? The initials in laid gold and colors, the first 7 1/2 x 5 inches (19 x 13 cm); the second 4 x 3 3/4 inches (10 x 10 cm). Framed.
Two extremely fine initials, though probably not from the same work.
Provenance: From the V.G. Simkhovitch Collection
By descent in the family.
