WHITE, THEODORE Set of White's four The Making of the President books, three inscribed to William Safire.
Four volumes in three quarters red morocoo gilt (the first three matching, the last slightly different). Comprising: The Making of the President 1960, a later printing inscribed in 1968 "For Bill Safire/A master of the art of politics...; The Making of the President 1964, stated first edition, with a 1980 letter laid-in from White to Safire mentioning the Nixon administration and suggesting they do a piece on Jewish names, with some clever comments; The Making of the President 1968, stated first edition, inscribed "For Bill Safire/Wit and philosopher, phrase-maker and historian, scholar and great friend."; and The Making of the President 1972, stated first edition, inscribed "For Bill Safire/Whom I shamelessly plagiarized - with affection and respect." The spines a trifle faded, else fine.
Theodore White won a Pulitzer Prize for the first book in this influential series which analyzed the rapidly changing American culture that elected John Kennedy to the presidency. Just a week following President Kennedy's assassination, White was summoned to Hyannis Port to interview Jacqueline Kennedy for Life Magazine, the events of these days were profiled in the 2016 film Jackie. White continued The Making of the President series through the Nixon administration and these volumes are inscribed to William Safire, Nixon's speech writer, publicist and political advisor.
