BRADY, MATHEW [attrib.] (1823-1896) General Irvin McDowell and Staff, Arlington House],
1862. Albumen print on later (?) card mount, 9 3/4 x 12 1/2 inches (246 x 316 mm), annotated in pencil on verso in a neat modern hand with the title of the print. Good tones, small closed tear in upper left margin, still very attractive.
Lee's home was abandoned by its owner after his decision to resign his U.S. Army commission at the start of the Civil War and to follow Virginia when it seceded, and his abandoned estate became a popular destination with Union visitors. The present image shows Major-General Irvin McDowell, a full-length portrait, facing left, standing on steps with eight officers and one officer holding a horse.
Property from an International Corporation.
