BRADY, MATHEW (1823-1896) General William T. Sherman and his Staff,
1865. Imperial composite albumen print on card mount. 14 3/8 x 18 inches (365 x 457 mm), annotated in pencil on verso. Good tones, though the mount friable and chipped, and with a stain affecting the foreground of the image (and a small stain with minor loss at the top of the image).
"Old Tecumseh" Sherman is depicted here with his staff: Generals J.A. Logan, H.W. Slocum, F. Blair , O.O. Howard, W.B. Hazen, Jefferson C. Davis and J.A. Mower. A curious feature of this example is that Blair has been physically collaged into the image at the right. It has been noted that "Blair alone missed the sitting, and he is missing from the first set of photographs... But Brady arranged to photograph him separately and added him to later versions of the portrait by pasting Blair's image onto an existing photograph... Brady then photographed the new, complete picture in order to make a negative that recorded Sherman's entire staff, and used it to print many copies of Sherman and His Generals." The present example is before that rephotographing.
